Impact Through Empowerment: Contributing Without Direct Participation

24 Mar 2025

In my career, I have realised that the best companies celebrate each success in a genuine, informal way. They avoid contrived rituals that can feel like an artificial façade.

In these organisations, individuals willingly help colleagues reach shared goals.

Take Janet from my local Parkrun, for example.

Although she does not compete, she choose to find the time to cheer on each participant to achieve their goals... even on cold Saturday mornings.

Celebrating success without ceremony creates an environment where everyone feels genuinely valued.

This approach is far more natural than forcing people to attend mandatory meetings or follow rigid procedures.

From my experience, an open approach, such as using a Slack channel for professional and personal achievements which is open to everyone, works better than overly formal recognition schemes in which it can be harder to contribute and share.

Once people embrace this method, openness becomes a habit. Employees feel inspired to share their accomplishments on their terms, promoting a positive organisational culture.
